1665: In 1665, John Conger came from England to Newbury, Mass.OnJan. 12, 1666 he married Mary Kelley, b. in Newbury, Feb. 12,1641,the only daughter of John Kelley. John Kelley came fromNewbury,England to Old Newbury, Mass. with the original founders ofthe townin 1635. His only other child was a son, John Jr., who marriedSarahKnight, the daughter of Deacon Richard Knight. John Jr. and Sarahhadfive children who had numerous descendants. . by father and son was a popular mode oftravelin the early days of Newbury. . Daniel Pierce, a prominentcitizen,well known throughout Mass. colony was organizing a group ofcitizensto move to a newly acquired Province of New Jersey which KingCharleshad wrested from the Dutch in 1664. In 1667, Pierce withnineassociate owners and forty-six other men, many with families,arrivedin New Jersey and founded the township of Woodbridge, locatedon anestuary that flows between Staten Island and the mainland andbetweenRariton and Rahway Rivers. Woodbridge, traditions says, wasnamed forthe Presbyterian minister they left back in the Newbury home.. JohnConger and his wife, Mary, and their infant son were amongthiscompany. Tradition is, and can be proved by some facts, thattheConger family came from Alsace, then a French province, toHolland(the name being Koeniger about the date of the massacre ofSt.Bartholomew 1572), and then from Holland to England, the namebeinganglicized into the English, Conger. IJOHNCONGER of Woodbridge, in the county of Middlesex, and Province ofEastNew Jersey, Planter, being in bodily health and in perfect mindandmemory, thanks be given to God, therefore: Calling in mindthemortality of this body, and knowing that it is appointed for allmenonce to die, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament,thatis to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend mysoulinto the hands of God that gave it, and for my body I recommend ittothe earth, to be buried in a Christian-like and decent manner, atthediscretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at thegeneralResurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty powerofGod, to bless me in touching such worldly estate, wherewith ithaspleased God to bless me in this life. I give, devise, and disposeofthe same in the follow manner and form: . ITEM: My will is thatmyfarm or plantation on which I now
dwell to be equally divided intotwoparts, beginning at the River and running with a direct linethroughthe whole length of my said farm or plantation, the Easterndivisionwhereof I will and bequeath to my son BENJAMIN CONGER, to beby himquietly and peaceable possessed, and enjoyed as soon as heshallarrive at the age of 21 years, and if my son JOSEPH please, heshallhave the liberty to live upon it 10 years after my decease,paying thecharge arising thereon. . ITEM: The use and improvement ofthe westerndivision of my said farm or plantation, and my dwellinghouse standingthereon I give to my wife during her state of widowhoodand when hercondition shall change either by marriage or death I willand bequeaththe said western division of my farm together with my nowdwellinghouse and all other buildings thereon to my son JOB CONGER. .ITEM: Iwill and bequeath to my son JOSEPH all my freehold right in thetowneof Woodbridge (Will also specifies as conveyed to Joseph hisrights toWoodbridge common lands yet to be divided.) I give to my sonmy Cartsand Ploughs with all the tackling belonging to them to my sonJOSEPHto have liberty to use them when they can be spared so long ashelives upon the place, he being at equal charge at repairing them..ITEM: My will is that if either of my three sons abovementioned,JOSEPH, JOB or BENJAMIN, shall die without issue, then whatland Ihave willed to them do descend to the survivor or survivors, andbeequally divided between them. . ITEM: I give to my son JOHNtenschillings; to my son JONATHAN five schillings; to my son GERSHOMfiveschillings; and to each of my daughters five schillings, all tobepaid by my son JOB, if demanded. . Lastly, I give all mycattle,horses, sheep and household stuff, to my faithful and belovedwife,SARAH CONGER, whom I do nominate and appoint my sole Executrix,to seethat this, my last will, be punctually fulfilled, and I dodeclarethis to be my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking andmaking voidall other wills by me formerly made.
